The colour combination for 2024 draws on the therapeutic attributes of water, particularly pertinent in times when our health and environmental concerns take precedence, offering a sense of tranquillity and optimism for a brighter future.
In 2022, Plascon became South Africa’s first coatings company to introduce a Colour Combination of the Year, featuring three colours instead of a single one. For three consecutive years, Plascon has presented these exciting colour combinations in a 60-30-10 ratio – the industry-standard design approach where 60% of a room is in a dominant colour, 30% in a secondary colour, and 10% in an accent colour – making it easier for users to achieve a well-balanced look.
The year 2024 heralds the emergence of a new trio of colours after months of research into the prevailing spirit as the world recovers from the pandemic and confronts severe climate challenges.
In response to a collective desire for serene, comforting spaces, Plascon looked to the allure of water to transform homes. This inspiration was close at hand as South Africa boasts a profound connection to this life-giving source, thanks to its extensive coastlines, pristine lakes, and abundant waterfalls.
The new colours
- Crystal-clear Caribbean Sea (G7-A1-2) at 60% dominates the design ratio. Its vibrant, warm turquoise with a green undertone invigorates spaces, bringing energy and a sense of renewal.
- North Beach (B4-B1-1) at 30% is a bold and saturated azure, evoking the comforting depths of the ocean without feeling too cool.
- Aqua Pura (G7-C2-2) at 10% is a gently shaded, blue-green which is the perfect highlight, a pale near-neutral reminiscent of the glistening sun reflecting on water.
Together, this layered and immersive harmony of hues awakens the restorative qualities of blue, a colour that research has shown to uplift moods and enhance feelings of rejuvenation.
