Africa’s first biophilic development finds a home on Cape Town’s upper Bree Street. Live in a space that connects you to the peace and tranquility of nature in the beating heart of the city. Apartments start from R1 104 000.
The Fynbos is a living, breathing building, built in harmony with nature. Blending the best of sustainability practices with exquisite interiors, clever design, elegant architecture and a jaw-dropping exterior that’s planted with 30 species of trees and 20 species of shrub, the property blends striking natural beauty with high functionality.
The Fynbos is a development by Lurra Capital and has been created by a team of 48, each experts in their field. These include a botanist, architect, landscaper, sustainability expert, landscape architect and engineers in various disciplines. The building aims to regenerate the urban landscape, with public and private spaces elegantly combined in this prime development. The Fynbos will form an internal street which will positively contribute to activating the inner city and share the building’s extraordinary design with all. Nature is the golden thread that runs through the building, with lifestyle elements such as a plant-based restaurant, organic vegetable market by Justin Bonello and specialist herbalist continuing the theme.
At one with nature
The Fynbos is a beautiful example of biophilic design – but what does biophilic design mean and how does it impact The Fynbos residents? Biophilic design is the use of natural elements to create harmony between architecture and nature. We all have an innate need to connect with nature, and biophilic design facilitates that connection, allowing us to get closer to the natural world while we move through and live in the building.
Aspects of nature are known to enhance our health and wellbeing – and as we spend approximately 90% of our daily life indoors, it can only improve our overall lifestyle to be surrounded by the natural elements that make us feel more positive, healthy and alive. Mentally, nature soothes and restores us and so by extension biophilic design is shown to reduce stress and mental fatigue.
The Fynbos expresses its biophilic design in a number of ways, in both its public and private spaces. The building, which is in the process of achieving a formal Green Star certification from the Green Building Council, has several innate sustainable factors built into it. Climate control is provided by the exterior plantings, which have a cooling effect and provide shade and screening. Low-flow fittings and a central heated water system allow for water efficiency, while a rainwater harvesting system is integrated into the balcony design. Electricity is partially supplied by solar, and the absorptive barrier of vegetation acts in both noise reduction and a natural ‘filtration’ system that cleans the air.
Space to Flourish
Priced to appeal to a diverse audience, expansive windows within each apartment overlook panoramic views of mountain and city, allowing in abundant natural light. Exceptional finishes and features include SMEG integrated kitchens, hi-tech touchpoints, terrazzo surfaces and a touch of Art Nouveau inspired detailing. Naturally, the palette is inspired by the earth and incorporates lush greens, warm terracottas, cool pale granites and natural timber, embellished with champagne metal fixtures. Residents will also benefit from reduced levies thanks to solar panels generating double the electricity quota needed to power the common areas.
