Update on Molapo Bridge
The construction of Molapo Bridge was suspended in 2022, when the project was at 90%, due to the approval processes of the relocation of ESKOM’s three heavy current underground electrical cables.
The objective of Molapo bridge is to connect the community of Molapo to the Jabulani Node and the Jabulani CBD. It will also create a socially and economically integrated future for the two Soweto communities who, despite living a stone’s throw apart, have been separated by a railway line.
Molapo bridge is the final portion of the various Jabulani TOD projects. Currently the JDA is prioritising completing the traffic circle at Bolani Road project which is underway whilst completing the land acquisition and statutory approval processes for the Molapo Bridge completion.
The developers confirm they have the design approvals, power attorneys to register the servitude, approval from the Joburg Property Company (JPC), and concurrence from the Mayoral Committee. They are awaiting the City of Johannesburg council to approve the registration of the servitude in favour of Eskom in line with the land asset management transfer policy.
The JPC , JDA and the City’s Development Planning are working around the clock to ensure that all statutory compliance approvals are sought so that we can effectively relocate the lines. Preparations for the works on site should resume soon, when council approves the registration of servitude.
