How to make your home look expensive on a budget

You don’t need to break the bank to make your home look more expensive – all you need is a dash of creativity and strategic planning.

Most of us would love to live in a home like those depicted on home makeover shows and in glossy magazines, but most of us dismiss it out of hand as a very expensive and fanciful pipe dream. However, not all transformative home improvements have to prove costly, and you certainly don’t need to break the bank when striving to make your home look expensive.

This is according to Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty who says: “The secret to achieving an expensive look isn’t actually rooted in the amount you spend.

“Making a home look expensive primarily comes down to the materials you use and how you dress your space and with a bit of creativity and strategic planning, you can easily transform your space into a high-end haven without spending a fortune.”

Why bother to make a home look more expensive? Geffen says the reason is twofold:

“Firstly, it’s wonderful to live in a home that is aesthetically pleasing and feels luxurious and curated. And it’s also a great way to increase your home’s value in today’s competitive market, especially if you are thinking about selling in the near future.”

From subtle design choices to impactful accents, Geffen suggests the following budget-friendly tricks to elevate your home:

  1. Neutral Colours: Embrace a palette of neutral colours such as whites, creams, and greys to create a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic. Neutral tones also provide a versatile backdrop that can be easily accessorized with pops of colour, dramatic art or metallic accents.
  2. Throw Pillows: Elevate your sofa or bed with plush throw pillows in luxurious fabrics like velvet or silk. Opt for bold patterns or metallic accents to add visual interest and depth to your space.
  3. Architectural Texture: Crown moulding on ceilings and walls or striking wall panelling can really elevate a room, adding architectural detail and elegance and giving the room a sense of gravitas and grandeur.
  4. Big Art: Make a statement with oversized artwork or mirrors that command attention and anchor the room. Large-scale pieces create a focal point and add a sense of drama and sophistication to your space.
  5. Statement Lighting: Illuminate your home with sleek and unobtrusive recessed lighting to create a warm, inviting, and luxurious ambiance. For a dramatic finish, add a statement piece because no expensive-looking interior is complete without a chandelier-style light fitting, whether it be a traditional or more contemporary design.
  6. Rugs: Luxurious rugs can make a home look and feel more expensive. Define and layer your space with area rugs that add texture, colour, and warmth. Choose rugs with rich patterns or plush textures to infuse your home with a sense of opulence and comfort.
  7. Gold Accents: Incorporate touches of gold or brass accents throughout your home to add a touch of glamour and sophistication. From light fixtures to hardware and accessories, gold accents instantly elevate the look of any room.
  8. Add a touch of gold: It’s one of the most symbolically loaded colours; and by incorporating accents in gold into your décor, you will add a touch of glamour and elegance to any space. And it doesn’t need to be overtly obvious: look to bring in hints of this shiny hue by incorporating gold-finished accessories, such as picture frames, mirrors, or decorative objects to elevate the sophistication of your living room décor.
  9. Mix Textures: Layer different textures such as velvet, fur, and metallics to add depth and visual interest to your space. Mixing textures adds dimension and creates a luxe, layered look that feels inviting and sophisticated.
  10. Grand Entrance: Make a lasting impression with a grand entrance that sets the tone for the rest of your home. Paint the front door and door frame in a bold colour like dark blue or charcoal grey, install a statement outdoor light fixture, and make sure your pathway and verges are spotless. Add a decorative console table or hang a large mirror to create a welcoming and elegant entryway.
  11. Backsplash: A quick upgrade for your kitchen or bathroom is a stylish backsplash that adds texture and visual appeal. Whether you choose tile, stone, or glass, a backsplash instantly elevates the look of your space and adds a touch of luxury.
  12. Elevate your bathroom: Coordinate your bathroom accessories such as towels, soap dispensers, and storage containers to create a cohesive and polished look. Choose high-quality materials and finishes for a luxurious feel. Consider a floor-standing plant and a jute basket of rolled towels or a ladder for towels.
  13. New Hardware: Finishing touches are a great way to make your home look expensive. Think door handles, drawer pulls, light switches, taps and sockets. These elements are often overlooked but they can pull an entire scheme together. Choose finishes like brushed nickel or matte black for a contemporary touch.
  14. Wallpaper: Add drama and personality to your walls with wallpaper in bold but elegant patterns or subtle textures. Wallpaper is a cost-effective way to create a statement wall or add interest to a room.

“Achieving a high-end look for your home really doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag,” concludes Geffen.

“With a bit of creativity and attention to detail, you can transform your house into a luxurious retreat that reflects your personal style and tastes.”
